Why?

Why?

I don’t get plagiarists: why do they bother? Surely it’s more trouble than it’s worth to steal things…and surely it can’t really feel good for the soul. I can understand why people used to do it (because even a few years ago the software for accurately checking to see if work was copied was still in its infancy), but nowadays there doesn’t seem much point: advanced programmed—free, no less—make it possible for anyone with a computer to check and see if their work has been stolen. With that in mind, how come it still goes on? And it does go on. A friend of mine tells me that as much as half the articles on the internet are outright copies. The thieves didn’t even bother to change the words around. And there is a more serious side to it, as well. Plagiarism really is stealing. It’s not only stealing someone’s work, but it’s making sure you will never get work in the industry every again.

Despite the risks of being caught, people still do it and get away with it. That number is getting smaller by the day, of course, but it’s going to be some time until all the thieves are all caught out. And I suppose it’s ridiculous why people do this anyway: it all comes down to money. Writing online can be quite lucrative if you know what you’re doing—and that’s all the incentive that some people need to commit an act that is essentially no different than walking in to a shop and walking out without paying.

But, and there’s always a but, there will come a time when this can’t go on. Already software is being put in place to limit the movements of dodgy characters, so within the next ten or fifteen years we could even see some major progression.

One last thing, I was talking to my brother who works in business and he reckons that there is massive money in buying stocks for central heating oil suppliers. He is one of those people who is of the opinion that America is trying to occupy the world by taking over the Middle East. I must say I am getting fairly fed-up of the fact that everyone seems to have the same justification on this. I mean yes I work in the oil industry, but that doesn’t mean that I am a bad guy, man I could moan about this for hours…
